You’ll explore Arequipa, Peru’s second-largest city, during four dreamlike days. You’ll discover its colonial-style architecture and beautiful churches, as well as the pampas and volcanoes on the outskirts that offer spectacular scenery. You’ll be able to admire the condors soaring over the Colca Canyon—one of the deepest in the world—and share unforgettable moments with the local communities.
Arequipa. Stroll through the ancient “forbidden city” of Santa Catalina, visit the Jesuit church, and enjoy the majestic views of the Misti volcano.
Santa Catalina Monastery. An authentic medieval cloister built in 1579 that, like a small religious citadel, remains in use to this day.
Colca Canyon. Marvel at the grace of the condors gliding over this 4,000-meter-deep valley and visit some of the remote villages in the area.
DAY 1 | Arrival in Arequipa - City tour and Santa Catalina Monastery
Flight to Arequipa.
Upon your arrival at the Arequipa airport, our shuttle service and a representative will pick you up and take you to your selected hotel.
You will be taken from your hotel to the Carmen Alto viewpoint, where you can enjoy views of the Chili River and the Misti and Chachani volcanoes. Next, you’ll visit the Yanahuara viewpoint to take in the urban contrast and admire the buildings constructed of sillar, a white stone characteristic of the area. Afterward, the tour will continue to the Plaza de Armas, the heart of city life. Finally, you’ll explore the Convent of Santa Catalina, which features plazas, cloisters, and streets.
*Dress code for visiting churches: pants, long shorts, or skirts that cover the knees; otherwise, entry will not be permitted. Please note that, since this is a shared tour, the pickup window is 30 minutes from the scheduled start time.
One night’s accommodation in Arequipa at a selected hotel.
DAY 2 | Arequipa – Colca Valley
In the morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel to begin the trip to Chivay. The route follows a paved road, passing through the Aguada Blanca National Reserve in Pampa Cañahuas, an area where you can observe vicuñas in their natural habitat. You’ll make a brief stop in Patahuasi, where you’ll have the opportunity to sample local herbal teas and use the restroom. The journey will continue through Viscachani and the Toccra wetlands, home to alpacas, vicuñas, and various migratory birds. You will then arrive at Patapampa, the “Viewpoint of the Andes” (4,910 m.a.s.l.), from where you can admire the imposing volcanic range. Afterward, you will begin the descent to the town of Chivay (3,635 m.a.s.l.), where you will arrive around noon. After lunch, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. You’ll have the rest of the afternoon free to rest and enjoy the hotel’s facilities or explore the surrounding area on your own.
DAY 3 | Colca Valley – Cruz del Condor – Arequipa
After breakfast, you’ll be picked up from your hotel to begin the journey to the town of Yanque, where you’ll start the day with a stroll through its historic streets. You’ll continue on to the famous Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, the best spot to take in the vastness of the Colca Canyon and, weather permitting, watch the majestic flight of the Andean condor. Next, you’ll visit the Antahuilque viewpoint, with breathtaking views of the pre-Inca terraces, and make a stop in the town of Maca, where you’ll find a picturesque colonial church and local handicrafts. After this cultural and scenic experience, you’ll arrive in Chivay, where you’ll enjoy lunch and have free time to explore the area.
